Root Canal (Endodontic Procedure)
A root canal or endodontic treatment is sometimes necessary save severely infected or decayed tooth.
If you have an unfilled cavity that you ignored, and are suffering from severe tooth sensitivity, we may recommend a root canal to fix the problem and save your tooth.
The procedure is highly effective, and you will be able to go back to enjoying your favorite foods and smiling in no time.
The foundational component of the procedure is to eradicate bacteria from the canal of an infected tooth and prevent its reinfection.
When would you need a Root Canal?
A root canal, also known as endodontic therapy, may be necessary if complications arise from a previous filling, if a cavity has been left untreated for too long, or if a tooth has been chipped or injured. When tooth decay becomes severe, it can cause inflammation and irritation in the tooth’s nerve and canal. Similarly, facial trauma can impact the tooth’s roots, leading to the need for a root canal. This procedure may also be recommended if you experience extreme sensitivity to hot or cold foods.
Additional signs that may indicate the need for a root canal include:
- Severe pain when biting or chewing.
- Irritation or pimple-like bumps on the gums.
- Swelling or tenderness in the gums.
- Darkening of the tooth or gums.
- Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold even after the source of discomfort is removed.

What are the benefits of the Root Canal?
- When your tooth’s nerve tissue and pulp are damaged and exposed, they start to decay, and bacteria quickly multiply in the area. If the infection is not treated appropriately, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected, forming an abscess. A Root Canal procedure will help treat the infection and save the tooth as well.
- A Root Canal will enhance chewing efficiency by strengthening the tooth.
- After the procedure, the dental restorations done will restore the natural teeth’ appearance.
- The surrounding teeth are protected from excess wear and tear.
- The discomfort from consumption of hot and cold foods is eliminated.
- The normal bite force is re-established.
What can be expected from a Root Canal Procedure?
To begin, the dentist (Dr. Tomar or Dr. Patel) will administer local anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable and pain-free during the procedure.
An x-ray will then be taken to assess the shape of the root canal and check for any signs of infection in the surrounding bone. The infected or inflamed pulp is carefully removed using specialized instruments, and the canals are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Next, the tooth is filled with a medicated material and sealed. Even without the pulp, the tooth can continue to receive nourishment from surrounding tissues and remain functional.
Depending on the severity of the issue, the procedure may be completed in one or more visits. Afterward, you may experience some numbness or soreness for a few hours. Once a permanent restoration, such as a crown, is placed to seal the tooth, you can use it as you would before the procedure.
